VIEWER FEEDBACK
Antigone - Fringe 2021
Review by Nellie Crawford
My thoughts on Antigone, written and directed by Jane Hille;
A week ago I would have said Greek tragedies weren’t my thing, but after seeing Antigone, I’ve changed my mind. Admittedly, I did my homework and googled the whole sorry saga of Oedipus and his family before we went, but it didn’t prepare me for the emotional impact of this play.
The anguish portrayed by these young actors is visceral, and their emotions are raw and authentic. Not once during the play did I think they were anything but experienced professionals - a combination of natural talent and inspired directing.
Jane Hille has taken a 2500 year old story about dysfunctional families, injustice, duty and defiance and reinterpreted it to make it mesmerising and contemporary. Antigone is a tragedy, and I expected to be overwhelmed. Which I was, but talking to others in the audience after the play, we all agreed that this latest play of Jane’s was an uplifting experience.
I’m looking forward to her next one....
